Shoot Eight
This shoot was taken at a burned down factory in Hartlepool, and I used a D3100 Nikon to take the images. The location in which the images were taken was once a working factory but was victimised by arsonists and burnt down, since its closure, there has been more arson attacks, vandals have took over its remaining walls and increasing bad weather has caused more damage to the property. For all of the above reasons, I thought that this location would be ideal for this photo shoot as its displays all of the aspects to demonstrate how mankind is beginning to destroy every aspect its environment. This shoot also leads on from the one before as it illustrates how industrial aspects can cause the location and environment to be damaged by the work of man. Also, in the previous shoot, the location in which I went to had been recently closed down, and so has the location of this shoot and so both shoots show the decline in industry in the local area. Within the shoot, I have experimented with different techniques, which has made a lot of the images different from the rest. Firstly, I have looked at the different angles in which the images could be taken and I have used a lot of reflection work in the puddles which allows me to take images of the unique structure of the building, but in a more interesting way rather than just taking photographs of the building itself.
This experimental image started off by all of the image being in focus, however I decided to experiment with Photoshop by blurring the actual objects in the image and leaving only the reflections on the floor in focus, I then sharpened the new point of focus and altered the colours of the image to black and white to blend the colours of the sharp and blurred parts of the image together. I think that this final outcome is successful due to the idea of the reflection being the point of focus and all of the textures that are captured. The idea behind this image is that the reflection is caused by mankind, as the rain/puddles are caused by global warming, which is the caused by humans. Furthermore, surrounding the puddles that reflect the building is rubbish/waste that has been dumped there by various members of the public and this also shows how mankind destroys its surroundings and disrespect the local areas.
I particularly like this image because of the way I have captured the building through taking the photograph through the unusual angle of the lens facing the floor. By using the reflections through the puddles, I was able to capture what is left of the roof of the old factory, by shooting the floor, I was also able to capture the litter that the puddles were surrounded by which causes a feeling of regret for the viewer as mankind has created this mess and this could effect the nature in the surrounding location. Furthermore, the composition of the image is unique from the rest as there is no background showing what the building actually looks like and so this creates mystery for the viewer. Even though there is no background showing the full view of the building, it is clear that I have considered the set up of this image, as I have included the puddles in the middle, frontal part of the image and in the distance, rubble and litter can be seen. If I we to improve this image, I would increase the brightness for some parts as they appear to be underexposed, for example, the mesh on the right hand side of the image has created a lot of shadows and so this lowers the success of the image.
This is another image in which I would consider to be successful due to the high amount of sharpness and the focus in the whole of the image. The sharpness allows the viewer to see the full content of the buildings structure and all of the metal beams that used to hold the factories roof in place can be fully viewed. The idea behind this image, as well as most of the other images, is that mankind has destroyed its own creation as well as destroying the environment. By coming to this location, it portrays the idea that man is completely destroying its natural environment as well as destroying man-made locations like this one. Moreover, we can say that this image does have same depth to it due to the locations of objects in the image. For example, we have the puddle with portrays a reflection of the structure, then in the middle of the image we can see the rubble and a brick building which is also part of the factory. Finally in the background, we can see the surrounding environment. Furthermore, rule of thirds has also been used due to the brick building being slightly off centre point.
This image is more evidence of images with different viewpoints within the shoot. In this image, I took the photograph of just the floor however the puddle makes the image more relevant as it shows the remains of the building. In the image, use of framing composition has made the image more interesting as the puddle reflects what is above and the floor around frames this. Also, the use of lines from the reflection are very bold and so it appears there is lots of images been placed together when the lines are joined up to make the larger image and this effect is created becuase the lines are more central to the image and are bigger than what they are in the rest of the images in the shoot.
