Layering
Through looking at Greg Sands work, I thought I would experiment using his techniques of creating holes in the images and overlaying them physically with newspaper/pages of a book. However when making the holes, rather that cutting out specific objects, I burned the holes in the images and I think this created a better effect that cutting into the image and this techniques links more with my idea. The idea behind this technique is that of burning through the paper, destroying the image, like humans destroying the environment. Furthermore, the text backing the image represents the anitations of people destroying the environment by their actions.
This technique links in well with this image because the burning through links in with the story behind the factory which is that the factory was subject to arson resulting in it becoming derelict ruins and this was how man destroyed the area to be how it is now. The burning through enhances this idea.
I think these images also fit well with the technique, because in this instance, the text represents all of the media stories behind the closure of the steel works and by burning through the image and replacing parts with the texts, it shows how the industry has been destroyed and the local economy has also been destroyed by the loss of jobs. It also shows that, how over the years, the steel works has created trouble for the environment and destroyed the natural earth around it with the pollution created.
